1. How to get to Ioannina

Ioannina may be reached by sea, by air and by road.

From Athens

By air

The only airline that flies to Ioannina from Athens on a daily basis is Olympic Air.Ticket prices are relatively high so we advise that you book your domestic ticket as early as possible to obtain a low fare.

By car

Ioannina is a 432km drive from Athens. One can rent a car from Eleftherios Venizelos Airport. Six car rental companies currently operate at the Athens International Airport. By bus

Buses arrive from Athens to Ioannina on a daily basis. The bus ride is approximately 6 ½ hours and the one way bus fare amounts to 39€.

 

From Thessaloniki

By air

There are no flights from Thessaloniki to Ioannina

By car

The distance between Thessaloniki and Ioannina is 260km. A new, modern highway (Egnatia Odos) has recently linked the 2 cities making the trip agreeable and approx.imately 2 ½ - 3 hours. Cars can be rented from the International Airport of Thessaloniki "Makedonia".

By bus

Buses arrive from Thessaloniki to Ioannina on a daily basis. The bus ride is appoximately 3 ½ hours and the oneway bus fare amounts to 32€.

 

From the Port of Igoumenitsa, Thesprotia, Greece

By sea and then by car

The port of Igoumenitsa is the third largest port in Greece and by virtue of size alone is a very busy port. Many ferry lines dock at the port from both local and international destinations. Igoumenitsa is serviced by ferries sailing from Bari, Brindsi, Venice and Ancona in Italy.

Igoumenitsa - Bari - Igoumenitsa

The ferry companies: Adriatic Ferries and SuperFast Ferries sail daily to Bari in Italy. The trip takes an average of 10 hours. Bari, the capital of the Apulia, is the second largest city in southern Italy. The port of Bari is usually very busy and provides cafes, ATM's, public phones and other services available at the port.

Igoumenitsa - Ancona - Igoumenitsa

Currently, SuperFast Ferries, ANEK Lines and Minoan Lines sail to and from Ancona in Italy. The crossings take approximately 15 hours for each company. The large busy port at Ancona is in the north east of Italy. The port runs 24 hours a day and has restaurants, bank tellers and other amenities.

Igoumenitsa - Venice - Igoumenitsa

Minoan Lines and ANEK Lines offers daily crossings to Venice via Corfu. The total journey time is approximately 24 hours. The port at Venice is a thriving passenger and cargo port with excellent passenger facilities and close to many local conveniences.

Igoumenitsa - Brindisi – Igoumenitsa

Endeavor Lines offers daily sailings to Brindisi from Igoumenitsa. The trip takes about 9 hours in total.  Brindisi, in Italy, is busy port that provides many facilities including ATM machines, information centres and telecommunication services.

...and then by car

From Igoumenitsa, Ioannina is a 40min. drive on the new Egnatia highway. There are several car rentals in Igoumenitsa, however to ensure that you find the most competitive rates and a wide range of cars it is advisable to book online, in advance.

 

2. How to get from the King Pyros Airport to the city center of Ioannina

By taxi

Taxis are abundant in Ioannina Airport and relatively cheap.

A taxi fare from the Airport to a Hotel in the centre of the city will cost approximately 15€.

 

3. How to get to the University of Ioannina

By car

The University of Ioannina is approx. 7 km. from the city centre of Ioannina. At rush hour, by car, the trip will take at most 15-20minutes.

By taxi

Taxis are cheap in Greece. A taxi ride to the University costs approximately 7-10€. Taxis can be located very easily. Ask at your hotel reception for one, go to a taxi stand or call the Radiotaxi company on + (30) 2651046777.

By public bus

Buses run frequently from the city centre to the University (approx. every 10min.). The trip takes around 20 minutes and the single trip bus fare amounts to 1.5€. Bus numbers from the city centre: 16, 17.

By the University Shuttle Bus

The University Bus will pick up participants from a central meeting point every morning around 30min. prior to the start of the agenda and transport them to the appropriate location in the University Campus where the Summer University will be taking place.

It will also return participants to the centre of town once the day's agenda has finished.
